My Mother and My Mother in Law
Two Grandmothers Transform a Family's Chaos
My mom shows up! With one phone call from family, friends, or anyone within her universe, she is there! My mom is a doer and a doer for anyone else who needs something done.
Recently, my husband’s niece and her husband had triplet girls, in addition to their two- year-old toddler. They needed reinforcements to care for the whole family. My mom raised her hand immediately, who wouldn’t want to hold three little infants. But let’s consider that my mom is in her mid-80s, and could easily have offered her congratulations, sent a card and cute matching outfits, and said, “been there, done that.” She has two children of her own who gave her six grandchildren who gave her five great grandchildren. She has had her fair share of babies. Yet, when babies need held, cared for, and the parents are open and receptive to help, she is ready, willing, and God have mercy, able to show up.
My mother-in-law has six children who gave her eleven grandchildren and who gave her twelve great-grandchildren. She has had her share of babies too.
My mother volunteering and showing up for this family of six doesn’t surprise me at all. The earth-shaking revelation is that she and my mother-in-law show up together twice a week to assist in the work and love of this blessed big and busy family.
These two women, born the same month and same year of 1942, are feeding, changing infant clothes and diapers, bathing, preparing bottles, folding laundry, and playing on the floor with three infants and a wild toddler weaving her way through the plethora of action.
The universe shifts when those females come together. Why? Because my mother and mother-in-law had never spent more than an hour together since the day of our wedding thirty-seven years ago and at birthday parties over those three decades. Although they grew up in the same town and live only two miles apart, they are different women who live different lives and never had a reason to connect, until now. I’m told they are enjoying their triplet time and toddler tasks, and each other. I call it “The Triplet Transformation.” Who knew?!
One thing I know for certain is the love, care, and feminine power shared in that home is life changing, earth moving, and mind-blowing energy benefiting the whole universe.
